Sewerage: a return to basics to benefit the poor

    Get PDF
Around 2.8 billion people, mostly in developing countries, currently lack adequate sanitation. Approximately half live in urban areas, where the most appropriate sanitation solution is commonly simplified sewerage. This paper presents the rigorous hydraulic design basis of simplified sewerage and compares this design approach with that used in the UK for conventional sewerage. It reviews simplified sewerage construction and how this achieves major cost savings and also avoids the problems commonly experienced with manholes

Stock prices as a leading indicator of the East Asian financial crisis.

    Get PDF
Using a basic monetary model, we assess the effectiveness of stock prices as a leading indicator of the East Asian currency crisis in 1997 and 1998. Stock prices are incorporated into a monetary model, through the wealth effect postulated by Friedman [J. Pol. Econ. 96 (1988) 221]. In addition to the domestic stock price, we also incorporate the stock prices of Hong Kong, China and Japan. Using monthly data, the results indicate that the domestic stock price, the Hong Kong stock price and particularly US prices are significant leading indicators of the crisis. Causality tests suggest evidence of bi-causality between the stock markets and foreign exchange markets

The lifetime of a unilateral target zone: some extended results

In Dumas and Svensson (Journal of International Economics 36 (1994) 467) the lifetime of a Krugman (Quarterly Journal of Economics 106 (1991) 669–682) type target zone model is found to be extremely long. This paper shows that the lifetime of the identical target zone regime can be much lower when real disturbances occur. In particular, the mean lifetime is found to be very low when real disturbances occur and the real exchange rate elasticity of the demand for domestic goods is very low. It is also shown that allowing for monetary disturbances to have real effects has very little effect on the lifetime. The results indicate the conditions under which real disturbances might trigger currency crises

STUDIES ON THE MECHANISM OF TUMOR INHIBITION BY L-ASPARAGINASE : EFFECTS OF THE ENZYME ON ASPARAGINE LEVELS IN THE BLOOD, NORMAL TISSUES, AND 6C3HED LYMPHOMAS OF MICE: DIFFERENCES IN ASPARAGINE FORMATION AND UTILIZATION IN ASPARAGINASE-SENSITIVE AND -RESISTANT LYMPHOMA CELLS

L-asparaginases of agouti serum and Escherichia coli cause a profound lowering in the level of free asparagine in the blood of treated mice and also in the tissues. During treatment, normal tissues and resistant 6C3HED lymphomas survive unharmed with intracellular asparagine levels which are critically low for sensitive lymphomas. An explanation for this contrast between the two types of lymphoma is provided by the finding that resistant cells have not only a higher asparagine synthetic capacity than sensitive cells but appear able to utilize endogenous asparagine preferentially for protein synthesis. Cell-free extracts of resistant cells contain an asparaginase synthetase, but this is not found in preparations from sensitive cells

Improving root cause analysis through the integration of PLM systems with cross supply chain maintenance data

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a system architecture for integrating Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems with cross supply chain maintenance information to support root-cause analysis. By integrating product-data from PLM systems with warranty claims, vehicle diagnostics and technical publications, engineers were able to improve the root-cause analysis and close the information gaps. Data collection was achieved via in-depth semi-structured interviews and workshops with experts from the automotive sector. Unified Modelling Language (UML) diagrams were used to design the system architecture proposed. A user scenario is also presented to demonstrate the functionality of the system
